Carbon Credits

UPC has registered 13 projects on the voluntary carbon market over more than 10 years across seven countries. The majority of UPC’s carbon credits have been emission avoidance credits from renewable energy generation, however UPC is now expanding into the development of nature-based solutions projects through UPC Nature.

Carbon Credits from Renewable Energy

UPC Renewables has registered 13 wind and solar energy projects on the voluntary carbon market. These projects are in India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mongolia, the Philippines, China, and Tunisia.

Carbon Credits from Nature-Based Solutions Projects

UPC Nature is currently exploring the development of grassland restoration, grassland management, mangrove restoration, afforestation, and reforestation projects in the Asia Pacific region.

In line with UPC’S core values, the company is dedicated to generating only the highest quality carbon credits that remove carbon from the atmosphere or avoid carbon emissions, and also positively impact the local community and environment.

Experience and Expertise

Our 75 MW Sidrap windfarm, which began operations in April 2018, was the first utility-scale windfarm in Indonesia. Located on a group of windy ridges in the Sidrap region in South Sulawesi, the project supplies clean electricity to 70,000 local households through the production of 253,000 MWh of renewable energy per year. The project avoids 140,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions per year by providing emission-free electricity to households that would otherwise receive electricity from fossil fuel-based power plants.

Experience and Expertise

In addition to carbon avoidance, the project also:

  • Created 35 new jobs for local workers with applied equal pay for equal work principles
  • Provides regular training opportunities for employees
  • Offers free educational seminars and visits for members of the public who wish to learn more about the project
  • Monitors, manages, and mitigates local water quality contamination, bird mortality, and other negative impacts on local flora and fauna

Separates and responsibly disposes of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials
